Supai, AZ Backpacking Trip

Havasupai Falls

Dates Visited: Saturday March 10th – Sunday March 11th, 2018
Weather: Cloudy but warm enough to hike in shorts and tank. Water temp was in the mid 60’s. Rained all Saturday night.
Crowd: We were able to go to each falls with only a few people around. By the end of the day, the campground was filled up so make sure to get there early to get a good spot!

How to get to the trail head: Put “Hualapai Hilltop” into apple or google maps. The trailhead will be at the very end-past the helicopter pad-by the bathrooms and office.

Permits: You HAVE to get a permit which can be purchased here.

Pricing for 2018 is as follows and includes all necessary permits, fees, and taxes:
One Person, 2 Days / 1 Night: $140.56
One Person, 3 Days / 2 Nights: $171.12
One Person, 4 Days / 3 Nights: $201.67
(Weekend nights (Friday, Saturday, Sunday), Holiday weekday nights (February 19, May 28, July 4, September 3, October 8), and Spring Break weekday nights (March 5-8 and 19-22) are an additional $18.34 per night.)

No day hiking is permitted – all visits require at least a one night reservation made prior to arrival.

We ended up getting the 2 day / 1 night permit and were able to go to all the falls the first day but had to hike 16 miles in one day. I recommend getting a 2 night permit, as it is very tiring to do it all in two days.

Trail Landmarks Mileage
Hualapai Hilltop to Campgrounds 10 miles
Hualapai Hilltop to Supai 8 miles
Supai to Campgrounds 2 miles
Supai to New Waterfalls ~1 mile
Campgrounds to Mooney Falls .5 mile
Campgrounds to Beaver Falls 4 miles

When should I start my hike? 🕗 The earlier the better! The hike down to the campground is about 10 miles and takes about 4.5-5 hours depending on how quick of a hiker you are. (It is also all downhill/flat ground.) You have to check in at the village before you get to the campground so depending on how busy they are if could take longer.

Kitchen Goodies

For those of you that are curious about what type of snacks and drinks I enjoy, here is a list of a few of them:
TeaI buy these teas from my local Whole Foods. Traditional Medicinals Organic & Non-GMO Tea has sooo many different flavors it’s hard to choose sometimes! Ginger Aid is one of my favs, especially after I’ve had a big meal or my stomach isn’t feeling too hot. Another one of favorite flavors from them is Belly Comfort which is a peppermint tea that has ginger, fennel, and also promotes healthy digestion. Tazo‘s Zen Green Tea is the perfect pick me up in the morning with a mixture of green tea, lemongrass, & spearmint. I’ve been drinking this one for years and it’s definitely more flavorful than plain old green tea + it has that minty taste that I really like!😋

Mamma Chia

Mamma Chia is of course on my list! Chia seeds = life. I eat at least one of the squeeze packs everyday since they are so easy to take on-the-go and they are a great way to get this superfood seed in your body! Annnnd they are also TSA approved and don’t need to be refrigerated 🙌🏽. They are available at Target, Sprouts, Whole Foods, Vons/Safeway & Ralphs!

✨ My Favorite Flavors Are:

Drink: Strawberry Lemonade 🍓🍋

Squeeze Pack: Cherry Beet 🍒 & Strawberry Banana 🍓🍌

Energy Beverage: Raspberry Razz

These are some of my favorite drinks that I usually have in the fridge. REBBL makes it easy to drink turmeric and matcha green tea. They are super delicious and also good for you – win, win!

✨ Featured Flavors: Turmeric Golden-Milk & Matcha Latte 🍵

Another drink that looks kind of scary is nékter‘s Charcoal Skinny Lemonade! This drink has activated charcoal that draws toxins from your body, reduces bloating, and boosts your digestive functioning. Great to drink if you want to really cleanse your body!

*WARNING – can cause scary looking 💩*

Townshend’s Tea Company is a newer company that I just recently discovered. They are Organic, Non GMO, Gluten Free, Kosher, & 1005 Raw! They carry a 6 pack of different flavors of their kombucha at my local Costco, so, I decided to try it since it was such a good deal! I found that the flavor ‘Clear Mind‘ is my favorite.

“A brilliant botanical flavor with notes of rosemary and sage. Each herb in the recipe is noted for its ability to assist in mental clarity and focus.” 🍹

Ingredients: Filtered Water, Organic Green Tea, Organic Cane Sugar, Organic Rosemary, Organic Peppermint, Organic Sage, Organic Dandelion Root, Live Probiotic Culture

Big Slice Apples are kettle cooked apples with superfoods! They have 3 collections which are Pure, Fit, & Luxe. These are also a great on the go snack, refrigerated or not! 🍎

✨ Favorite Flavos:

Banana Mango & Hemp Seeds

Cinnamon French Toast

These snack packs are Non-GMO verified, made with USA apples only, includes no high fructose corn syrup, great source of Vitamin C,  naturally gluten & fat free, and is also vegan!

Devil’s Punch Bowl Hike

Devil’s Punch Bowl AKA Cedar Creek Falls is a 5.2 mile hike all down hill on the way to the waterfall and all up hill on the way back. We did this hike on May 23rd, 2017 and started around 9:20AM and finished around 1:00PM. We spent about an hour and a half at the waterfall. The water was pretty cold but felt nice since it was so hot out 💦 The hike down was super easy and the temperature was about 77-80 degrees. The way up was a bit tougher as the temperatures went up to about 95 degrees 🔥

📷 Here are some photos from the hike:

Devil's Punch BowlIMG_4707

How to get to Devil’s Punch Bowl:

We just put “Cedar Creek Falls” into apple maps but here is the actual address: 15531 Thornbush Road Ramona, CA 92065. Once you get to the end of Thornbush Road, the trail head is just to your left.

How to prepare for the hike:

You have to get a permit (only $10) which can be purchased here. Make sure to get it ahead of time because spots fill up quick! They only allow up to 75 permits to be sold per day. Each permit is good for up to 5 people.

When should I start my hike? 🕗 The earlier the better! The falls are much less crowded in the morning plus it’s a lot cooler so the hike won’t be as brutal! There is free parking right by the start of the hike but it fills up quick!

Can I bring my dog? 🐶 Dogs are allowed but must be leashed at all times. I would NOT recommend bringing a dog especially at this time of year because of how hot it is. As we were hiking back up the trail, temperatures were already up to 95 degrees and since I was dying on the way up, you probably don’t want to put your dog through that!

What should I bring on the hike?  🎒 I recommend wearing a hat and/or sunglasses and good hiking/trail shoes-I wore Teva’s Waterproof Arrowoods since you have to walk through 3 small streams plus they are super comfortable and great for shorter hikes like this. Also, you should bring a backpack and fill it with TONS of water, some snacks or a full lunch if you plan to stay at the water fall for a couple of hours, a light quick dry towel and bathing suit (if you plan to go in the water), and sunscreen. I also brought a camera and GoPro to get the photos in this post. Don’t forget to bring the permit you purchased and your ID’s just in case someone comes around to check!

Here are some of the products I brought in my backpack:
